Miss Clarke had Room 5 complete a Camp Review when they got back to class. She asked them a series of questions, everything from rating their experiences out of 5, rating their attitude and participation and then having them reflect on the best bits and challenging bits.

Here’s a sample of what they had to say.

Something that challenged me while I was at camp was…. 

-kayaking in deep water.
-the Plank Challenge because we had to start over and over.
-the snorkeling was difficult for me because whenever I went under the water all the water went up my mask.
-team building in the barrels and the tyres.
-the kayaking because my arms were sore from rowing and going through tight spaces was hard.
-walking up a really steep hill to the Rainbow Warrior.
-kayaking, because I have never been kayaking properly.
-the confidence course and kayaking.
-the rope on the Commando Course at the start.
-climbing the rope on the team building.
-the tyre wall, getting over it was scary!
-not to talk when we went to bed.
-the climbing wall. I couldn’t do it and then I practised and I was the best at getting over.

Wow what a wild time we had a camp! Room 5 and 8 were amazing and had an awesome 3 days away at Lonsdale Camp, doing heaps of team building around camp,  visiting the Parrot Place in Kerikeri and kayaking + snorkelling in Matauri Bay. I’d love to be able to get some writing from the children up on the blog, and we made iMovies as a part of a photo scavenger hunt that we might be able to share as well. So much to do!  In the mean time, here are a few photos of some of the highlights from our camp!

As the end of the school year fast approaches, there’s still lots of excitement happening. We’re busy working on the up-coming production for Thursday night, and I though perhaps I’d ease up on the homework this week since there’s so much going on. But I still had lots of children asking me if they had homework.  

Instead of sending home a homework sheet to do, I ask that you do still read for 20 minutes every night (this is a great habit to keep up over summer so that you don’t forget all that you’ve learned while you’re off for 6 weeks!). On Friday morning we had a special guest visit us. Norbert Hausberg of Strings Attached Puppet Theatre has been travelling all over New Zealand this year,doing Marionette performances. He started the year in Bluff, and our show was the last of his Northland tour.

Norbert makes all of his puppets himself, by hand. He performed Rumpelstiltskin and the children all enjoyed the performance. After the show, students had the opportunity to take a tour back stage and see all of the puppet characters up close. Mr Hausberg explained how he makes the puppets do different actions by placing the strings in certain places.

Well, I was so inspired by Room 5′s amazing Reading Inquiry iMovies they produced this week, I decided that I should have a go with iMovie myself. I hadn’t actually used the program properly before, and some of the students kindly had to teach me how to do a few things – I learned to add slow motion!

So while Papa Jim had the class split into 4 teams playing multi-team soccer, I stood in the middle of the field and tried to get some action shots (and not get hit by at the ball at the same time).

I think next time, I’ll try to add some different music so that the same song doesn’t repeat 3 times!

Our learning journal is a book that we can write how we are feeling. This is also a chance for the class to reflect on our learning that involves something that we are proud of or something that we think we can improve on.

WHY DO WE DO IT?
One morning miss Clarke told the class this crazy idea something about a learning journal, where we can write how we want to feel for the day an what’s bothering us I could totally tell miss Clarke was excited about this! It was a great idea. Now every morning when we all come into class we write in our learning journal.

Topic: CAMP – Rainbow Warrior
Since we’re on our way to Matauri Bay next week, we have a little bit to find out before we get there. One of our activities will include a walk up to the Rainbow Warrior Memorial. Please read the following information, and answer the questions below. YOU WILL BE AWARDED CAMP GROUP POINTS FOR COMPLETING THIS.

The prominent headland at the northern end of the main beach at Matauri Bay is called Pukepika. A signposted walking track inside the camping grounds leads to the plateau on the summit of Pukepika and affords spectacular views over the channel between the mainland and Motukawanui Island – the largest island of the Cavalli group. In the stretch of water to the north lies the Rainbow Warrior, brought up from Auckland and scuttled here to provide an artificial reef for sea life and an attraction for divers. To commemorate all who sailed in the Rainbow Warrior, local hapu (sub-tribe) Ngati Kura and New Zealand China Clays Ltd commissioned a sculpture for this site. Between 1988 and 1990, internationally-acclaimed Kerikeri sculptor, Chris Booth, created a large-scale work comprising an arch of rocks and basalt pillars, all brought from the nearby rocky shore at Piakoa, 6 km to the south. To avoid any disturbance to sea life, all the rocks used in the sculpture were removed, with much difficulty, from above the high water mark. The 66 large round basalt boulders that form the 10 metre arch weigh almost ½ a tonne each. The main stone of the central basalt column weighs 6 tonnes. It supports a smaller 4 tonne basalt column and between these 2 great stones is the dented bronze propellor from the sabotaged Greenpeace ship. A large flat boulder inscribed with a map indicates the ship’s final resting place, 6 km to the north.

In reading are doing an inquiry about sports. The books we are reading are about sports and new skills people learn. Our teacher Miss Clarke gave us a sheet for our whole group to record information on and if we can find the answers the questions we asked. One of the questions was ‘how do people cope by playing sports in wheel chairs’? And I was wondering how they do it? So we researched on the computer.
We are going to make videos on iMovie based on sports to show the senior syndiate assembly and try making the movie and trailer interesting. Some people know how to use iMovie and teach the rest of the classroom how to make movies.
